Update Christmas 2011

GREENHILLS OPEN DAY AND AGM

Greenhills Open Day 2011 was held on Sunday, 7th August. As well as the opportunity to inspect the site and enjoy afternoon tea with us, our Executive Director, Peter Badowski, and Managers, Stephen and Kathy Schlenk were commissioned at a special service conducted by our Moderator, Rev. Niall Reid, of the NSW/ACT Synod of the Uniting Church.

Staff Commissioning August 2011

The Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday, 12th October, with 25 people in attendance. After being welcomed by our Chairperson, Averill Edwards, and devotion by Rev. Duncan MacLeod, reports were tabled.

Averill Edwards announced that she is concluding her time on the Board on 2nd December, handing over the reins to Barry Howe. We all sincerely thank Averill for the wisdom and dedication she has brought to the role of Chairperson over the past three years. We warmly welcome Barry, a long-standing and industrious Board member, into his new role as Chairperson, and look forward to continuing a great working relationship with him.

Jessica Morthorpe had great pleasure in presenting Averill with Greenhills Centre’s certificate of accreditation in the Five Leaf Eco Award. We are the first Christian campsite to qualify for accreditation in this pilot ecumenical environmental change program.

Five Leaf Eco Award Oct 2011

Jessica is moving to WA, and we wish her every success and happiness there.

A DAY OUT VISITING THE NEIGHBOURS

The Enlarged Cotter Dam is a major engineering project just down the road from Greenhills. Being close neighbours, our staff plus the managers of Camp Cotter-mouth, Owen and Jenny Russell, were invited to take a special conducted tour of the facility. The scope of the project was breathtaking, and those tiny cranes seen in the distance are huge up close! We were all most impressed with the conscious effort to protect the environment — from revegetation to providing habitats for fish in areas that will soon be totally submerged. There are walking trails alongside the dam and regular Open Days advertised.

GARDENS AND GROUNDS — BEFORE AND AFTER

We have shown you some of our recent projects in re-juvenating gardens and developing recreation areas in the last couple of Updates. Working bees in September and November assisted with even more upgrades. New lawns have been planted, and the central area is looking fresh and green, with more trees and gardens flourishing.

We have been keeping a photographic record of these works in progress, and thought you might be interested in seeing some ‘before and after’ shots of the areas that have been worked on this year. It is pleasing to see how much things have changed!

Here is a central recreation area ‘before’ shot.

And the finished project, complete with mural on the water tank.

 CONGRATULATIONS KELLY AND DAVID!

Our Customer Service Host Kelly and husband David have welcomed baby Matilda Rose into their family. ‘Tilly’ is their first child, and she is already proving to be taking after her Mum — beautiful, and with a delightful personality. Matilda was born at 6.15am on 8th September, weighing 3.4kg or 7lb6oz. Kelly reports that she is finally getting into a routine, and even more importantly, getting some sleep!

Kelly is hoping to rejoin our team next year. We thank Cherie, also a Customer Service Host, who extended her hours, and Helen who stepped into the breach in the office on a casual contract to cover Kelly’s maternity leave.

WORKING BEES

We sincerely thank all those who have attended 4 Rotary and 2 Community working bees this year, helping us with many projects, and achieving great results for the site. Our last working bee, held on Saturday 5th November, was attended by a group of disabled people from Shaw Possibilities, working under the supervision of Ginninderra Rotary Club members. Gravel and pinebark were spread, posts put in along a walking trail, and some painting completed outside Coorumbene Cottage — all greatly appreciated!

ACCREDITATION & AWARDS

Greenhills Accreditation CertificateThe Greenhills Centre was delighted to be recognised last September with an ACCREDITATION award from the National Accommodation, Recreation & Tourism Accreditation Inc. This NARTA Accreditation is endorsed, recommended or accepted as a standard of achievement by departments of education in Victoria, South Australia & Tasmania ( and favoured by NSW, WA and Qld) as well as several church denominations and State parks and outdoor recreation authorities.  Throughout Australia some 39 venues and service providers in the accommodation, recreation & tourism industry have been Accredited. As the only venue Accredited in the ACT Region, Greenhills provides assurance that our facilities, operation and service are of high standards.

Jessica Morthorpe is currently evaluating Greenhills Centre for rating and recognition under The Five Leaf Eco-Award for Christian Venues. Having developed and administered this award program for churches, Jessica is now extending the criteria to recognise camp and conference venues within Christian Venues Association and piloting this work at Greenhills. TRANSFORMED!

Transform v.t. to change in appearance, condition or character.

(Macquarie Dictionary)

Greenhills Central Park 2011Over the past six months, much of Greenhills Centre has been transformed.  The Manager's Residence has been done up inside and out (including drainage and gardens), Cabins 1 & 2 painted throughout with beds/digital TVs added, the Connie Christie Chapel has being upgraded, and the Murrumbidgee Units are being refurbished with new bathrooms and ceiling insulation.  Other outside areas, including adjacent Scouts property and Block 66, have been cleaned up and cleared of weeds and the central park area has been landscaped brilliantly Greenhills is most grateful for the great effort and contributions made over this period by Stephen & Bruce, plus volunteers.  The contributions by volunteers from Melba Shed, Rotary Clubs and Wesley's MMMM Group has been outstanding.  All friends of Greenhills should take the opportunity to arrange a visit to see these wonderful improvements.

MEET THE MANAGERSGreenhills Manager May 2011

After 8 years of devoted service from Managers Paula & Ed Challenger ended in September, new Managers Kathy & Stephen Schlenk commenced in late November.  With previous experience running “Tatachilla”, a Christian campsite near Adelaide, they have 'hit the ground running', and Greenhills has been blessed with their enthusiasm, knowledge and abilities.

CUSTOMER SERVICE HOSTS

Cherie May 2011Kelly May 2011In March, two Customer Service Hosts were appointed, in lieu of the former Assistant Customer Service Manager (Jose), to assist with the hosting of groups, bookings, room preparation etc, Kelly Arnold and Cherie Smeal.  Kelly is also assisting with administration duties an extra day each week.

FAREWELL AND THANK YOU TO HERB AND CYRIL

Norma's Tree May 2011

After years of service to Greenhills Centre, Cyril Trezise has discontinued his duties as Duty Manager in January.  Cyril's involvement as a volunteer, committee member and Committee Secretary have made him a permanent Friend of Greenhills, as well as a good friend to many of the groups including management, staff and contractors.

Herb Heath has also recently retired from regular volunteer service. Herb's contributions to the maintenance and development of Greenhills, in partnership with Norma, has been very extensive (including two “Herb's Sheds”), and Herb has been such a part of the Monday Volunteers that he will be sorely missed.

The Norma Heath Lounge and the memorial tree in the central area, will be constant reminders of the love and dedication that the Heaths have shared at Greenhills.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS

At the beginning of 2011, three new Board Members were appointed.

Don Gruber, the instigator of Melba Shed  -  a joint project between Rotary Club and North Belconnen Uniting Church  -  brings a wealth of experience in financial management and community service.
Genevieve Power has relevant business experience, and a commitment to Greenhills that extends back to Max Hill's management period, the bushfire recovery on the (then) Management Committee, with many Rotary working bees in recent years.
Rev. Duncan Macleod is the Presbytery Minister, and has direct experience as a minister for youth and families, and as a consultant in online communications, youth work and faith development.
